Quick reflexes, or always ready to jump?

I saw a video of guys in a salt truck jumping out just before it slid into the lake in Chicago. The time between the slide starting and them jumping out of the truck leads me to think that they immediately moved to jump at the start of the slide, with no hesitation about whether it was going into the lake.

So, had they already determined that any slide meant that the truck was going in the lake? Was this based on previous experience? (Also, probably not wearing seatbelts, and really prepared to jump?)

That was amazing, I think when the driver bailed the passenger just did the same (or vice versa). I want to say previous experience

I think they realized  that if they were sliding even with all that weight in the back that there was no way it was stopping.

Good point. Maybe there was a pre-salting safety meeting (formal or informal) that identified the risks and prepared them to jump.

It’s a new thing called, situational awareness (they had the doors cracked, no seatbelts on, inside foot wedged against something to push on, etc.).

So now it's a salt water lake?

Definitely not wearing seat belts and ready to jump! I’ve done that when driving on a frozen lake... seatbelts off, ready to grab that door handle. Not that I’d go out unless it was VERY safe, but still.

I have no experience sliding into lakes, but I’ve had my fair share of icecapedes and if I felt the truck going down at that speed, and the brakes weren’t helping, yeah I’d bail too.

I love that the wipers were still running even after pulling it out of the lake.
